I worked on my daughters 2005 Accord today. It’s all fixed, but I had to remove all sorts of stuff to get to the starter and replace it.

On a good ole American V8 RWD car it’s much simpler.

That’s because those 7th gen Accord engine bays are so cramped. The one time I would have loved to be a liquid metal Terminator was when I was replacing my rear spark plugs.

it’s surprising to hear how cramped a 4-cylinder Accord is, especially since that car is designed to accommodate the V6. I thought it’d be the least cramped Honda because of that. It’s also why I usually like big cars with small engines.

The TSX is probably even worse, being the European Accord. Same shit, smaller body, which means even harder to work on.

On the Vibe you have to remove the battery to replace the driver’s side headligbt because it’s right up against the back.

This is crazy. I remember on my EG Civic you could sneak your hand under some wires and hoses and undo the two bolts holding it in, without removing anything :/

Had to remove the air filter, air box, and a box surrounding the battery on the wife’s Focus to get to said battery. Upon trying to disconnect the positive terminal it was frozen on so bad the terminal spun out of the battery itself.

2 hours to get a battery out. I’ve done heater cores in less time.

On the Magnum RT RWD, you have to remove the starter just to replace the crank sensor. Unless you drive a Magnum RT AWD, in which case the crank sensor is on the other side of the bellhousing, and completely unobstructed.

Why they couldn’t all have the same bellhousing and crank sensor location is beyond me. Only would have simplified and standardized everything.

Counterpoint: Many years (decades?) ago, I had to replace a starter on a Pinto station wagon (RWD, 4 cyl, auto). Yes, it was mine. I was poor. :( The exhaust was in the way of the starter, and so rusted I couldn’t get it apart with the meager tools I had at the time. I ended up pulling the non-functioning A/C compressor out, put a jack under the engine, remove a motor mount, unbolt the starter and push it all the way forward to the radiator in the little tunnel I had created. I despised that car...

I sometimes feel there should be an international regulation that requires all transverse engines MUST be inline motors. Accessing rear spark plugs on a transverse V-6 is always a nightmare.

If your small FWD car really must have more power than that 4-cylinder delivers, add forced induction already.

I forget which, but on some cars, dropping the engine is the easiest way of accessing the rear spark plugs. Because transverse DOHC V6. Luckily mine’s only a SOHC.
